NEWINGTON – The Newington Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging families to sign their children up for one of their Summer Playground Programs. The programs are offered starting June 25 through Aug. 10. These programs are open to both residents of Newington and non-residents.

Summer Sunshine is one way to introduce preschool-aged children to the Summer Playground experience. Summer Sunshine is open to children ages 3 and 4. The Summer Sunshine program is staffed by the preschool teachers at the Creative Playtime Preschool Program. The hours of Summer Sunshine are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is also an optional extended care from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The youngest campers will enjoy play time, arts and crafts, music, outdoor play, and more.

Parents with children entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall of 2018 should check out Playground Pals. The hours of Playground Pals are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is also an optional extended care from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Playground Pals program uses the Mortensen Community Center site and Mill Pond Park for their daily activities and swimming. Children completing Grades 1 through 7 have the opportunity to participate in Camp RECreate. The hours of Camp RECreate are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Children completing grades 1 and 2 in June of 2018 will attend Camp RECreate at the Mortensen Community Center site and will use Mill Pond Park for their daily activities and swimming. This summer’s weekly themes for this age group are: Learn MCC, Seasons Week, Mad Scientist Week, Game Show Week, Water Week, Olympic Week, and Bon Voyage Week. Children completing grades 3 and 4 in June of 2018 will attend Camp RECreate at Churchill Park for their daily activities and swimming. Children completing grades 5, 6, and 7 in June of 2018 will also attend Camp RECreate at Churchill Park for their daily activities and swimming. This summer’s themes for our oldest campers are Olympic Week, Red, White, and Blue Week, Water Week, Game Show Week, Sports Week, Spirit Week, and Carnival Week. Field trips will be enjoyed by Camp RECreate participants each week.

For those children who aren’t ready for camp to end, the Parks and Rec staffers are adding another week of fun from Aug.13 to Aug. 17th.

Register children entering kindergarten through the fourth grade for Camp S’more.
