NEWINGTON - Firefighters were able to stop a garage fire from causing major damage to a Church Street home Thursday evening.

A fire was called in at about 6 p.m. at 432 Church St., Assistant Chief Tom Lapierre said.

Firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the front of the garage with much of the structure burning, Lapierre said.

The family who lives in the single-family home were home when the blaze started and got out safely on their own, he said.

The fire was called in at the height of a thunderstorm that including driving rain.

There was only minor damage to the home because firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it set the house on fire, Lapierre said.

It took about 30 minutes to get the fire under control, he said.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
