NEWINGTON – A youth forum scheduled for Wednesday evening has been postponed due to the storm.

Newington’s legislative contingent was preparing to meet local teens in Churchill Park for a Youth Roundtable at 4 p.m. Following the extensive damage and power outages from Tropical Storm Isaias Tuesday, the event has been postponed until next Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 4-6 p.m. in the Rotary Pavilion next to the playground.

Legislators are hosting a gathering for area teens to learn about the challenges unique to them through the pandemic and ongoing social movements.

State Rep. Gary Turco of the 27th District, D-Newington, will be joined by Sen. Matt Lesser, of Middletown, and State Rep. Kerry Wood of Rocky Hill. The group is hoping to gauge youth interest in various topics, including covid-19 relief, access to employment opportunities, social justice issues, higher education and climate change.

“It has been important to the whole Newington delegation to connect with our youth in the community, understand the challenges they’re currently facing and listen to their ideas for change,” Turco said. “Now with the covid-19 crisis, many of our young residents and professionals will face additional challenges. They need to know we will have their backs in creating state policies that will help them succeed now and into the future.”

The delegation is inviting Millennials and young adults to participate, wearing masks and practicing social distancing while in attendance.

This is not the first time this group of legislators has collaborated on an event in the Newington community. They’ve also held discussion forums at the Lucy Robbins Welles Library, the Newington Senior & Disabled Center and in Town Hall.

Back in June Turco addressed youth substance abuse in a virtual webinar with the Governor’s Prevention Partnership. Joining the conversation were Newington High School Resource Officer Daniel Kaufmann, Newington Human Services Youth Coordinator Rik Huggard, Newington Interfaith Clergy Association member Nancy Baxter and Deborah Lake, prevention program manager with the non-profit partnership.
