NEWINGTON – Newington police are advising anyone in the community wishing to donate to the family of an officer who died over the weekend following a medical emergency to use the proper channel.

“We are aware of several fundraising solicitations that mention Officer (Alan) Tancreti,” Newington police Sgt. Ryan Deane said.

The sergeant said donations to Tancreti’s three children should be done by making out a check “The Children of Alan Tancreti, PO Box 527, West Haven, CT 06516.”

This is the only channel authorized by Newington police and the Tancreti family, Deane added. Any other solicitation mentioning Tancreti’s name should be avoided.

Tancreti on Saturday suffered an off-duty medical emergency at his home and died. He had been with the Newington Police Department for seven and a half years.

The father of three went by the nickname “Tank” in the department. His service with local police was preceded by a teaching career at North Haven Middle School, according to an obituary. It was always his dream to become a police officer, the obituary continued.

Tancreti, a North Haven resident, was born in New Haven and had a love for hockey – which he played in high school, college and an adult league after his secondary education, the obituary continued.

“We thank our community for the ongoing support,” Deane said, as he has stated that the loss of Tancreti left the Newington Police Department carrying “the burden of a heavy heart.”
