SOUTHINGTON - The Southington baseball team was involved in a pitcher’s duel with East Catholic on Friday night but came out on the short end as the Eagles won 2-1 after scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning.
Ryan Sheehan was a tough-luck loser for the Blue Knights as he went all seven innings and allowed just the two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Jeremy Mercier had two of Southington’s six hits and also drove in the team’s only run against Jake Casey.
Platt 11, Plainville 1: The Blue Devils fell behind early against the Panthers and were never able to climb out of the hole. Plainville scored its one run in the sixth inning but by that point the score was already 11-0. Jordan Bishop allowed five runs over five innings on the mound.
Berlin 8, Bristol Eastern 3: The Redcoats qualified for the postseason with their win over the Lancers on Friday. Dan Piruccio picked up the win on the mound, while Ryan Hyde went 2-3 with a double and two RBI and Adam Willametz had three hits.
Innovation 22, Prince Tech 12: The Ravens pounded out 24 hits on Friday afternoon and were able to overcome five errors to pick up their 11th win of the season. Lianna Giles and Lucy Rodriguez were the stars of the game as each had a solo home run and five RBI in the contest. Giles finished with four hits, picked up the win in the circle and struck out seven, while Rodriguez went 5-5.
Berlin 6, Middletown 1: The Redcoats picked up their ninth win in their last 10 matches with a dominating win over Middletown and have now qualified for the Class M tournament. Jon Trevethan improved to 13-0 on the season and led the singles to a sweep over the Blue Dragons. Nick Halkias was also notable as he did not drop a single game in his match.
Avon 5, Southington 2: The Blue Knights were unable to keep up with one-loss Avon although they did play several close matches. Mike Balaoing, one of Southington’s two winners, won in three sets and took the third-set tiebreaker by a score of 10-7. The doubles pair of Jon Kryzanski and Kevin Chudy were the only other Blue Knights to pick up a win and they did so in straight sets.
