Sports Roundup: New Britain baseball takes division crown with shutout win over Newington

NEW BRITAIN - The game lasted just five innings due to rain, but that was plenty long enough for the New Britain baseball team to score seven runs and earn the CCC division crown with a 7-0 win over Newington.

Ruffino Santiago picked up the win for the Hurricanes as he went all five innings and allowed just two hits. Jordan Blanchette came out on the losing end for the Indians.

New Britain’s offense only picked up six hits but it made the most of them. Josh Garcia went 2-2 with two RBI, Alex Silva added a double and two RBI and Will Homar scored three runs.

The Hurricanes improved to 14-5, while the Indians dropped to 12-7. Each team has one game remaining.

Southington 4, Northwest Catholic 1 (5 innings): The Blue Knights’ Ryan McIntyre provided the game’s lone extra-base

hit, an RBI double. His teammate Jake Babon added an RBI single himself. On the mound, Southington’s Bailey Robarge threw a complete game in the rain-shortened five-inning afternoon. He struck out three, walked none and the lone run given up to the Lions was unearned.

Goodwin Tech 8, Platt Tech 0: The Gladiators moved on to the semifinals of the CSC conference tournament with the shutout win. Tommy Hughes, Dave Plourde and Josh Masterson combined to allow just three hits over the seven innings. Paul Prior and Keith Selander each had two RBI while Matt Dziarkowski added two hits.

SOFTBALL

Newington 9, New Britain 1 (6 Innings): The Indians scored nine runs in the first three innings despite only picking up three hits in the rain-shortened game. Kat Lagace had one of those hits and drove in two runs while also picking up the win on the mound to go along with 11 strikeouts. Cyan Gonzalez was all over the bases for Newington and scored two runs. The Hurricanes also had just three hits, two of them doubles by Khirstina Velazquez and Amanda Jacobs.

Innovation 26, Capital Prep 7 (5 Innings): The Ravens scored 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back as they picked up their 14th win of the season. Lianna Giles picked up the win and struck out five while Lucy Rodriguez went 4-4 with a triple and six RBI at the plate.

BOYS GOLF

Maloney 217, Plainville 224: The Blue Devils came close but could not come up with their first conference win of the season. Zach Bartolini had the top score for Plainville with his 48 and Mike Melninkaitis followed closely with a 50. Maloney’s Dimitri Carnot shot a 38, which was the difference in the match and earned him medalist.

Newington 157, New Britain 204: Noah Hedberg was the medalist of the match. The Newington golfer shot a 33, for 3

under par on the afternoon. In total, the Indians had three of the top four scores. Following Hedberg, Ben Weyman shot a 38, while Max Turgeon shot a 41. Matt Roberts rounded out Newington’s top four with a 45.

For the Hurricanes, Kevin Merkle was their top scorer with a 42. Tim Carrier (50), Johnny Morell (53) and Jack

D’Alfonso (59) rounded out their group.

Xavier 152, Berlin 160: The Redcoats went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the state but were just edged out. Ricky Nappi of Berlin was the medalist of the match with his 35, but Xavier had the four next best scores. John Downs shot a 40 for the Redcoats.

GIRLS GOLF

Newington 206, Berlin 212, Manchester 240: The Indians took home the CCC South crown with the win, their first since 2012. Jessica Pierzchalski was the medalist as she shot a 45 in the rain. Chloe Bilodeau had the second-best score with a 48.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Cheshire 3, Newington 0: The Indians had a tough test against undefeated Cheshire and ran out of time after improving their score in all three sets. Leonel Caceres (five kills, six blocks), Kevin Bilbraut (14 digs) and Evan Metzger (21 assists) led the way for Newington.
