NEWINGTON - After a little over a month of searching, the Newington boys basketball team has found its new head coach.

On Wednesday afternoon, the school announced the hiring of Trinity College assistant Edward Quick to fill the position.

“Coach Quick is a career educator who presently serves as the Supervisor of Social Studies for the East Hartford Public Schools,” Newington athletic director Chris Meyes said in a statement. “He was able to show a clear passion for education and basketball throughout his interview process, which distinguished him as the leader of our education based boys’ basketball program.

“We welcome Coach Quick to the Newington High School Athletics program and are confident he will make positive contributions to the basketball program and the athletic department as a whole.”

Prior to his time at Trinity, Quick served as an assistant coach at Wesleyan University and head coach for Daniel Webster College, Western Connecticut State University, Glastonbury High School and Hartford Public High School.

Quick takes over a program that has been extremely successful over the past decade under the direction of Scot Wenzel, who stepped down on May 23 as the Indians head coach to spend more time with his family.

Wenzel finished his 14 years at Newington with a 187-122 record, including a Class L Final Four appearance in the 2015-16 season.
