WATERFORD - The Newington 12U All-Star baseball team is heading to Connecticut’s Final Four.

The All-Stars earned the berth after a 10-2 victory over host Waterford on Saturday to take the Section 3 championship.

Newington started off fast and never looked back. Alex Cappellucci began the game with leadoff home run, while Andrew Bugnacki singled home another run to extend the lead to 2-0 after one.

Newington later extended its lead with a big fifth inning. After Gabby Tirado led off with a single, Bugnacki stepped to the plate, hitting a two-run homer to right-center field.

The team later received hits from JT Gallinoto, Bryan Gilliam, Vinnie Maslauskas, Nick Gagliardi and Cappellucci to push the lead to 8-2.

As Newington’s bats were bringing in runs, Sean Callahan was having little trouble dealing with Waterford’s lineup that had scored 33 runs in its previous two games from the mound. Callahan pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs and four hits.

Bugnacki then came on in relief to get the final two outs and seal the win for Newington.

The All-Stars are now slated to play in the Final four staring Friday against Ellington in Guilford.
