FARMINGTON - A 34-yard touchdown pass from Roberto Sanchez broke a tie with 31.8 seconds to play as the Newington football team defeated Farmington 26-20 on Friday night, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Newington led for most of the game, but Farmington had tied the contest at 20-all with 8:01 to play on a 20-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion.

Sanchez intercepted a Farmington pass to help set up Newington’s first scoring drive of the game, as the Indians took over at their own 45. He threw a 30-yard TD pass to Carlum Caldwell with 5:05 to go in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Farmington answered at the 3:23 mark of the period, but the PAT was blocked.

A nine-yard TD run by Aveontae Frazier gave Newington a 14-6 lead, and the Indians took that advantage into halftime.

Farmington capped a five-play, 70 yard-drive with a 10-yard TD run with 9:25 left in the third quarter, but a two-point conversion failed and Newington maintained a 14-12 lead.

With 4:42 to go in the third quarter, Sanchez found Caldwell again for a 13-yards TD pass. The extra point was no good as Newington took a 20-12 lead.
