NEWINGTON - The Newington field hockey team came into Tuesday’s game against East Catholic looking for its first win of the season.

Thanks to the Eagles’ Alexa Weber, the Indians are going to have to wait a little longer.

Weber scored four goals and assisted on another as Newington was shut out 5-0 in the second meeting of the season between the two teams.

“It was a tough game for us,” said Indians head coach Veronica Grubin, whose team lost its first matchup to East Catholic 2-0. “We played really well against them the first time, and I was hoping we could turn it around a little bit. I don't think the score necessarily show how good we really did play. I’m proud of how the girls played, we just couldn't finish.”

Some of that was the result of Newington’s inexperience. The Indians are made up of freshmen, sophomores and juniors with much of the focus being put on the “small victories” Grubin said.

The goal of Tuesday was to simply score. Newington came into the game having scored just three goals this season.

“We didn’t get there, but I think we’ve played one of our better games,” the head coach said.

The Indians wanted to come out fighting, but East Catholic took over the game from the beginning.

The Eagles were able to score less than eight minutes into the first half with Weber leading the charge. The East Catholic senior juggled, bouncing the ball on her stick, her way to the net for the game’s first goal. It was the first of two Weber scored in the first half, the second coming before the halftime whistle.

Although just down 2-0 at the half, Newington was looking to generate some, any kind of offense. But East Catholic came into the second half with on its mind - shutout.

Weber score two more goals in the second half and also assisted on a Bridget O’Connor score.

Despite the Eagles’ offensive output, however, Grubin was pleased with the effort her defense put forth.

“The defense overall did great, my veterans, as veteran as my defense could be,” Grubin said. “They really worked well transitioning and watching their players.”

Samantha Giudice was one of the defensive players that stood out to Grubin in Tuesday's game.

“She just really held her own out there,” she said.

“I think we all played really well as a team,” Giudice said. “We worked well together, we lost but it was one of our better games. I think we're just a close nit team, it’s helpful for everyone, because we act as if we’re family.”
