SIMSBURY - The Newington boys volleyball team might be in a realigned conference this season, but it didn’t take long for the Indians to show why they are the defending Class M.

Newington not only won its season opener Monday night, but swept Simsbury 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-16).

“It was nice to open up with a win in the reconfigured conference,” Indians head coach Curt Burns said. “It’s a good competitive league.”

Along the way, Louis Egbuna led Newington with 13 kills; Ted Fradel had 10 kills and 4 blocks; Dan Cloutier recorded 22 assists; and Collin Liedke finished with 11 digs.

Despite the Trojans keeping the first set close, it was never much of a competitive match.

“We started out a little slow,” Burns said. “But once we got things going, we settled it and played the way we’re capable of.”
