NEW BRITAIN - Tommy Hughes tossed a complete game for the Goodwin Tech baseball team in its 9-1 victory over Abbott Tech Friday afternoon.
He recorded 11 strikeouts.
At the plate Hughes got plenty of run support, highlighted by Paul Prior’s three-run home run.
With the win the Gladiators moved to 9-5 on the season.
Abbott Tech 8, Goodwin Tech 2: The Gladiators struggled to produce runs when the chances were presented.
Goodwin Tech had eight hits but could only score a pair.
With the loss the Gladiators fell to 7-6.
Berlin 7, Conard 2: The Redcoats won at home to improve to 7-3 for the season.
Pitcher Stefanie Poulin picked up the win, while Michelle Cohen went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and four RBI.
Conard fell to 4-8.
Newington 7, Middletown 0: The Indians swept to victory at home, improving to 5-4 for the season.
Sean David, Matt Utter, Ben Arora and David Magsayo won the singles matches for Newington, while the teams of Atebb Rhaman and Daniel LaSota, Josh Ellis and Gynno Bacaoco and Lukas Klin and Videep Soni won in doubles.
NEWINGTON - Andrew Bugnacki had a special day for the Newington Babe Ruth 99 Restaurants team this past week.
Bugnacki pitched a no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in the 14-0 Newington win over Cheshire.
Matt Peronace and Nick DiCioccio led the way offensively. Peronace had three hits and DiCioccio had a long double.
Jesus Cinton, Sean Hurley, Aaron Hober, Alex Bugnacki and Andrew Bugnacki all had base hits as well.
With the win Newington moved to 4-0 on the season.
HOME RUN DERBY
Gaby Tirado and Shaun Callahan each participated in the MLB junior Home Run Derby, which was held at Volunteer Field in Newington.
Tirado took the crown in the 12U Division and Callahan won in the 14U Division.
Both advanced to the regional competition where they will compete for a chance to go to the 2018 MLB All Star Game and compete on the national level.
