BERLIN - The Berlin girls golf team isn’t underscoring the importance of Wednesday’s match, even against a two-win Plainville team.

Led by Jackie Cooper’s 43, the Redcoats handily beat the Blue Devils 197-262 at Timberlin Golf Course.

“This was important,” Berlin head coach Jim Barnes said. “It was a divisional match. For Jackie, it was her lowest score of the year and we ties our lowest team score of the year and we were able to do that without our No. 2 player.”

Without Alena Kittleman in the lineup, the Redcoats (9-6) still turned in three other scored below 55. Syndey Duke followed Cooper with a 50, while Bridge McQuillan and Jessica Napi weren’t far behind with a 51 and 53 respectively.

Haylie Garrison was Plainville’s low scorer with a 55. Kaylee Markavich (61), Alexia Sirois (70) and Jessica Royce (76) rounded out the Blue Devils other top scorers.

Newington 200, New Britain 249: The Indians continued their hot season with an easy win over the Hurricanes.

Newington’s Jessica Pierzchalski was the medalist, leading the way with a score of 48.

For New Britain, Kiley Griffin led the team with a 58, while Catherine Keithline shot a 60. Kendra Levesque, Leah Gaffney and Morgan Giantonio rounded out the Hurricane effort with scores of 64, 67 and 74, respectively.

Newington improves to 11-4 on the season, while New Britain drops to 3-11.

SOFTBALL

Conard 8, Newington 1: The Indians didn’t have much of an answer for the Chieftains’ Armela Mucka. The senior went 3-for-4 and drove in half of Conard’s eight runs.

Cyan Gonzalez scored the lone Newington run of the afternoon, stealing home in the first. Gonzalez went 1-for-3 at the plate, while her teammate, Morgan Stegmier, hit a triple.
