EAST HARTFORD - Dan Cloutier might be relatively new to the volleyball court, but the senior setter has already made an impact on Newington’s team.

Just two years into the sport, Cloutier has helped lead the Indians to a state championship in 2017 and earn the top seed in Class M for the second consecutive year this season.

“Dan Cloutier has really stepped up,” Newington head coach Curt Burns said. “He just got the top vote for the CCC All-Stars and he’s done a real good job for us.”

This week, during the CCC Tournament, Cloutier has had a total of five kills, nine digs to go along with 91 total assists; 50 during the quarterfinal against South Windsor and 41 in the semifinal against East Hartford.

But even after a stretch of four matches in four days and with the state tournament quickly approaching, Cloutier and the rest of his teammates have their sights set on back-to-back Class M titles and fifth in seven years.

“We just have to play it like it is, a championship game, every game,” Cloutier said. “We just have to give it everything we have left, and it should be enough. We have to stay disciplined, stay defensive and keep the work ethic up. Basically we just need to do what we always do: stay aggressive and we can beat any team.”
