CROMWELL - The stifling heat didn’t do the Newington 15U American Legion baseball team any favors Sunday afternoon.
Newington managed to score a combined four runs in its doubleheader against RCP at Cromwell Middle School, falling 3-2 in the first game and then 5-2 in the nightcap. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the high temperature and humidity.
Newington struck first in game one after Alex Bugnacki scored on a wild pitch, but RCP drove in three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the second. Newington attempted a comeback in the top of the fifth after Sean Hurley’s RBI double brought home Abel Collado, who had singled and then stole second and third. That was as close as the team got, however.
Austyn Howe had two hits to lead the Newington offense, while Bugnacki pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out four.
It was much different in the second game as RCP forced Newington to play from behind from the start. RCP scored in each inning and built a 5-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
Christian Rodriguez scored Newington’s first run of the game that inning. He reached first base on an error and came around to score another RCP error. Hurley singled in Howe to complete the scoring for Newington.
Sean Hurley and Erik Huffman had the only hits for Newington in game two. JP Gieras pitched well for Newington, allowing six hits and striking out four.
Newington falls to 4-4 and RCP improves to 7-6.
