NEWINGTON - Whenever Newington needed to score, Abel Collado seemed to have some sort of answer.
Collado doubled three times and scored three runs as the Newington 15U Post 117 Legion baseball team outlasted Wolcott 5-4 at Newington High School Thursday night.
Newington took an early lead with an RBI-groundout from Hank Penders, plating Jesus Cintron make it 1-0.
It didn’t take long for Wolcott to respond. They put up a four-spot in the third inning to take what seemed like a commanding lead.
But Newington began chipping away at the deficit in the fourth when Collado doubled and scored on an Erik Huffman single.
Collado got the scoring going again in the sixth, leading off with another double. Singles from Huffman and Penders drove in Collado to make the score 4-3 Wolcott.
Newington tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Collado led off with another double, Huffman singled and Hank Penders drove in Collado with a single to make the score 4-3. Huffman later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
After hits from Christian Rodriguez and Sean Hurley, along with a walk from Austin Howe to load the bases, it was Collado who came up clutch again for Newington. A single in the bottom of the seventh plated Rodriguez, securing the win for the team.
Austyn Howe pitched well for Newington, tossing 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out four batters.
Newington moves to 6-9 with just three games left in the regular season.
