NEWINGTON - Down to its final two games of the season, the Newington Legion baseball team is trying to end its season on a strong note. Monday was a good start.

Sam Dionne pitched six strong innings and Joey Zawisza hit an RBI double as Newington beat RCP 2-1 at Alumni Field.

Dionne’s only mistake came in the second when RCP scored its lone run of the night. RCP had the opportunity for more in the sixth, but Newington’s starter worked his way out of a bases-loaded and struck out the final two batters of the inning. Joe Coleman pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save.

Newington scored both of its runs in the fourth, the first coming on Zawisza’s double which brought home Anthony DeBlasio leadoff. Josh Gray provided the second run with a sacrifice fly to score Zawisza, who had moved over to third on Coleman’s sacrifice bunt.

Newington is now 8-12 and faces West Hartford tonight at Hall High School to conclude the season.
