WEST HARTFORD - Battling against first-place West Hartford on Sunday, the Newington 17U American Legion baseball team fought until the very last out, but came up just short.

After Newington tied the game in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Sean Hurley, West Hartford’s Ixael Albino drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning to seal the walk-off win 4-3 at Conard High School.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Newington fought back thanks to a leadoff double by Dennis Machial, who advanced to third on a wild pitch before Hurley’s sacrifice fly brought him home.

The painful defeat spoiled a brilliant outing by starter Alex Bugnacki, who tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one earned run on five hits. But it wasn’t enough to keep Newington from falling to 6-5 on the season.

Machial and Abel Collado each had two hits to lead Newington’s offense, while Hurley, Danny Braga, Jesus Cintron and Sam Parsell all found the hit column as well in the losing effort.
