NEWINGTON - Hank Penders only hit Monday night turned out to be the most important for the Newington 17U American Legion baseball team.

Down a run and with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Penders delivered a walk-off, two-run single to lead Newington to a 10-9 win over Winsted at Newington High School. Newington improves to 7-5 with the win and Winsted falls to 3-5, in the 17U American Legion Zone 1 standings.

Newington trailed 9-7 at the start of the frame and cut the deficit to a run after Austyn Howe scored on a throwing error by Winsted on Xavier Mitchell’s infield single. Mitchell ended up on second on the play and then stole third.

Sean Hurley followed with a walk and proceeded to steal stole second. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Penders won the game for Newington.

Howe and Danny Braga led Newington offensively, with two hits apiece on the night. Howe also got the win in relief of Dennis Machial on the mound.

Penders, Mitchell, Hurley, Jordan Barnes and Sam Parsell added base hits for Newington as well.
