NEWINGTON - The Newington High football team moved another step closer to state tournament qualification on Friday night with a 49-21 victory over visiting Enfield.
Nicholas Pestrichello threw three touchdown passes and added a TD run, while John Amaning ran it in for three TDs as the Indians pulled away for a dominant victory after what had been a close first half.
Amaning opened the scoring with a six-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead with 3:19 to go in the first quarter. Enfield got a seven-yard run to tie it at the 10:08 mark in the second quarter before Amaning broke a tackle for a 27-yard TD run and a 14-7 lead with 8:13 left in the half.
Enfield scores on the first play after the kickoff, a 52-yard pass, to tie the game again, but Pestrichello hit Keenan Esau on third and goal from the 25 for a TD and a 21-14 lead with 4:05 to go in the half.
After that, the Indians were never seriously challenged.
A trick play resulted in Pestrichello hitting Jordan Alexander for a 49-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-14 at the 9:08 mark in the third quarter, then he connected with Luca Briganti on a seven-yard TD pass for a 35-14 lead with 3:48 to go in the third.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Pestrichello ran the ball in himself from 35 yards out for a 42-14 Newington lead. With 5:44 remaining, a 78-yard TD run by Amaning made it 49-14 and the clock was kept running from there, although Enfield added seven points on a four-yard TD run late.
The Indians will close out their regular season on Thanksgiving Eve at Wethersfield, with a state tournament berth likely on the line.
