The United Soccer Coaches announced their Fall Girls Soccer High School All-Region Teams this week, and a pair of area athletes made the prestigious list after dominant seasons.
Newington’s Olivia Mullings and Southington’s Abigail Sowa earned the honor of being named among the best talent in New England after sparkling junior seasons that helped their respective teams reach the state tournament.
Mullings, a midfielder, followed up her dominant All-State sophomore campaign with an even better junior season, leading the team in goals and helping the Indians to a No. 6 seed in the Class LL state tournament, where they bested Hamden 3-2 in the opening round before losing a tight 1-0 contest to Wilton in the second round.
Mullings helped Newington to a 14-2 regular season record, and likely locked up another All-State selection.
Elsewhere in Class LL, the Blue Knights rolled to a state championship appearance thanks in large part to Sowa, one of the team’s top midfielders who finished the regular season with 10 goals and two assists, and her play in the postseason (including a penalty kick goal to help Southington reach the semifinals) helped the team overcome an injury to key contributor Shannon Litchfield, who missed the entire postseason.
Sowa and the Blue Knights didn’t lose a game, and never even trailed in one, until a 1-0 loss to Glastonbury in the championship game, but it was still very much a season to remember for the team and Sowa herself, who will be back to help Southington try and finish the job in 2020.
