The Newington 19U CT Elite Baseball Association team was deadlocked with Cheshire on Thursday night, until Jose Ventura broke it open to become the hero.
Ventura hit a long two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and lead Newington to a 4-2 victory over Cheshire Thursday night at Newington High School. Sam Dionne pitched a masterful complete game, allowing only three hits, two runs and striking out four without walking a batter. Cheshire jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first and Newington responded with a run as Kevin Mooney drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ryan Saindon. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Nick Cox drove in Danny Crouse, who had doubled, to tie the game at two. This set the stage for Ventura’s heroics in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Scialabba had a big game for Cheshire, picking up a double and triple in three at bats. Newington improves to 4-6 with the victory and Cheshire falls to 7-4.
