Roundup: St. Paul boys, Newington girls roll to wins

BRISTOL – St. Paul boys basketball defeated Derby Wednesday night, cruising to an 81-56 win to improve to 2-0 this season.

The Falcons were led in scoring by Jamie Leggett’s 23 points and 14 rebounds, a double-double. Ben Bochicchio had 18 points and six assists and Mekhi Petteway also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Derby was led by Angel Aviles’ 30 points.

SMSA 55, Terryville 47: Terryville boys basketball dropped its game against SMSA Wednesday night in the Dave Rybczyk Memorial Tournament in Plainville, losing 55-47.

Tournament MVPP Dominick Dao had 26 points in the loss as SMSA overcame a first-half deficit to win. Nizayiah Bogar scored 14 points to match SMSA teammate King Shaw with the team-high.

Jake Rinkavage, an all-tournament selection, had 12 points for Terryville.

Girls basketball

Abbott Tech 46, Goodwin Tech 29: Goodwin Tech lost Wednesday night, falling to 3-2 with a 46-29 loss to Abbott Tech.

Goodwin led through the first quarter and entered halftime ahead 11-6, but Abbott Tech gained ground across the fourth quarter and hauled off in the fourth as it outscored the Gladiators 40-18 in the final 16 minutes.

Goodwin was led in scoring by Megan Lukeszewski’s 11 points, connecting from 3-point range three times. Teammate Mariela Cartegena had seven points.

Abbott was led in scoring by Tavahnnarie Sok’s 16 points and Samora Merchantm’s 14 points.

Newington 51, Ridgefield 40: Newington girls basketball took the Tyler Ugolyn Memorial Tournament Wednesday night, winning 51-40 over Ridgefield.

Newington got ahead through the first frame at 16-10 and ran away with it, outscoring Ridgefield by 10 across the second and third quarters. An 18-point fourth quarter by Ridgefield was its highest scoring frame of the night but Newington scored enough to make the late surge null.

The Nor’easters were led in scoring by Lilly Ferguson, who scored 21 points. Complementing her on the floor included Bella Cucuta’s 13 points and a six point, nine rebound, three assist and two steal night from Karissa Zocco.

Leading for Ridgefield in scoring was Kaya Weiskopf with 11 points.
