WEST HARTFORD – The Newington Nor’easters and the Conard Red Wolves are each coming off big Week 1 losses at the hands of Southington and Staples.

Newington figures to have the edge at quarterback in most of their matchups this season with senior Padraig Brown. The No. 7 Southington Blue Knights were able to minimize his efforts last Friday, however, taking the opener by a 35-14 final.

The Blue Knights feature a veteran defense which picked off Brown three times. The quarterback completed just 16-of-41 passes (39%). He was also sacked twice in the loss.

Both Nor’easters touchdowns came by way of senior running back Luca Corvino. Corvino had both a two-yard touchdown rush and reception serving as the only trips to the end zone for Newington.

Despite losing by a 21-point margin, Newington handily controlled the time of possession. The Nor’easters possessed the ball nearly 10 minutes longer than Southington.

Conard fell 42-13 to the Staples Wreckers who moved the ball at will in Week 1. The Red Wolves allowed 188 yards on the ground with four touchdowns and 241 yards through the air with two touchdowns.

Nine receptions and 161 of those receiving yards were allowed to one player in Week 1, which could be a sight for the sore eyes of Newington’s Josiah Ross. The wide receiver is set to be one of premier playmakers for the Nor’easters after a tough weekend against Southington.

Newington at Conard

When: Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Conard High School

Records: Newington 0-1, Conard 0-1

Last Meeting: Conard 42, Newington 21 (10/22/2021)

The Breakdown

This could be a great spot for Newington to gain some momentum after what was probably be their toughest matchup of the season in Week 1. Offensively, Padraig Brown will need to build on their time of possession against Southington and turn more drive into scores. Given the numbers Conard allowed last week, Brown and the Nor’easters should have the opportunity to showcase their full arsenal of offensive abilities in this game. The Red Wolves returned five players who played significant roles in 2021 to their defense. Thursday’s matchup is a big one for that unit after Brown proved to be mortal in Week 1 with three interceptions.

Cameron Beall’s Prediction

Newington 34, Conard 15
