Paul Frank Theiner, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Kirkland, Wash. on July 11, 2017.
He was born in New Britain to the late Paul and Margaret (Deutsch) Theiner. Paul graduated from New Britain High School and the University of Connecticut.
He received a PhD from Harvard University where he began his teaching career in 1961, later serving on the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin before joining the faculty of Syracuse University retiring from there in 1998.
He had a passion for the arts, especially medieval literature and classical music. He loved sports, especially baseball and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
Paul is survived by his wife, Pat Driscoll; his two sons, James and his wife, Laura, of Florida and Stephen and his wife, Cara; and a daughter, Elizabeth, all of Syracuse, N.Y. He also leaves five grandchildren, five stepchildren and several step-grandchildren. Paul is survived by a sister, Judith Kostrzewa, and her husband, Waldemar; two nieces, Laura Rogalski and her husband, John, and Christine Connolly and her husband, Tim, all of Southington; and a nephew, Michael Kostrzewa and his wife, Tanya, of Wethersfield.
Paul was predeceased by his daughter, Sarah. He also leaves a special friend, Norman Preissel, and his wife, Jean, of New Britain.
A memorial service will be held in Syracuse, N.Y. in September.
