Margaret “Peggy” (Sutcliffe) Winger, 96, of New Britain, widow of George Henry Winger, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at Cassena Care in New Britain. A lifelong New Britain resident, she was daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Sutcliffe and Ethel (Johnson) Sutcliffe. Peggy graduated from New Britain High School, Class of 1937, at the age of 16, and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. She worked as a school crossing guard for the City of New Britain and later at Northeast Laboratories in Berlin. She was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in New Britain.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Winger and her husband, Paul Czerny, of Lexington, Mass.; and Ruth Romel and her husband, Martin Fitzgerald, of East Hartford; four grandchildren, Amanda Bochicchio and her husband, Joseph, of Simsbury; Katie Husband and her husband, Chris, of West Hartford; Erica Levin of Providence, R.I., and David Levin of Seattle, Wash. Also surviving is a brother, Samuel Sutcliffe and his wife, Peggy, of Alstead, N.H.; a sister, Ruth Freeburg of Portland, Conn.; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband Henry, she was predeceased by a son, Allan Winger; a brother, David Sutcliffe and a sister, Elizabeth Knudsen.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 147 W. Main St., New Britain, CT 06051. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Britain. There are no calling hours. The Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain, is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
