Beverly (Bodmer) Johnson

Beverly (Bodmer) Johnson, 88, of Newington, wife of Edwin Johnson, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017. Born in New Britain, daughter of the late Harold and Gertrude (Reindel) Bodmer, she lived in Newington since 1957.

Besides her husband “Ed,” Bev leaves her son, Craig B. Johnson and his wife, Deborah, of Old Saybrook; her daughter, Beth Johnson Lentz and her husband, Vern, of Harwinton; four grandchildren, Matthew Johnson of Loris, S.C.; Rachel Johnson-DeRycke and her husband, Eric DeRycke, of Old Saybrook; Seth Lentz and his wife, Blaire, of Burlington; and Justin Lentz of Harwinton; her great-grandson, Lincoln DeRycke; a niece, Dori Dyer and her husband, David, of East Berlin; many cousins and friends.

Starting at the age of 3, Bev was a child stage and radio performer. She sang on the first radio show in New Britain. Bev enjoyed many years working at Johnson the Florist on Church Street in New Britain until it was sold to Brierley’s Flowercrest business of Kensington. Bev was a member of the former Stanley Memorial Church since 1943 and was an active Women’s Guild member. She was one of the first women deacons of the church and a member of the first Pastoral Relations Committee. Bev was a longtime volunteer at New Britain General Hospital, where she volunteered in the Critical Care Unit as a family advocate for 32 years.
