Antonetta Chiola Grandis, 94, of Greenwich, Conn., and formerly New Britain, Conn., passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2017. She was born on Sept. 24, 1923, in Cugnoli, Italy, to Sabatino and Carmella Chiola.
Antonetta married Luigi Grandis in 1949; together they left Italy and immigrated to the United States to make a better life for their family. They settled in New Britain with their three daughters. Antonetta worked at the Emhart Corporation. Antonetta was adored by her family and friends for her love of life and youthful spirit.
Antonetta is survived by her daughters, Cinzia Johnson (Greg) and Loredana Grandis (Thomas Libassi); her grandchildren, Dylan, Maria (Musante) and Byron Gwinn, Daria (Lavinio) and Erica Johnson, Antonia, Francesca, and Isabella Libassi, and her four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Gabriel Chiola and his family in Hillsdale, N.J., along with her siblings in Italy, Gigino, Angelo, Anthony, and Maria. She was predeceased by her husband, Luigi, eldest daughter, Vinia Gwinn, son-in-law, Bruce Gwinn, and siblings, Iolanda, Ilda, and Vincent.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 6, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s of Sienna Church in Riverside, Conn. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Stanley Street in New Britain. In lieu of flowers, it was Antonetta’s wish that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Vinia and Bruce Gwinn.
