George DeGrandis, age 73, celebrated last call on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at home in New Britain surrounded by family. He was born on April 30, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pa., to George and Sybella (Stinson) DeGrandis. As a lifelong roofer, George specialized in copper and slate work and took great pride in doing it “the right way.” Working for various companies throughout the years, and at times working for himself, George became a craftsman in his trade and ultimately finished his career with Trumbull Restoration in 2010. On May 7, 1978, he married Barbara Marie and together they had two sons, George and Mark. Often bringing his sons to the job site, George was proud to pass on his trade to his eldest son, and his charm and good looks to the other. A member of various social clubs in New Britain and surrounding towns, including The Varpas Dramatic Society, Loyal Order of Moose and Amber Club, he enjoyed time socializing and made countless friends and had many fond memories. George loved to spend the winters in the Florida Keys and often made the trip down with his good friend “YT,” where Islamorada became their second home. An avid sports fan, he rooted for the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies and UConn women’s basketball. Absolutely nothing brought George more pride than his three grandchildren, Alyssa, Aiden and Cassie. Generous and humble, he will be remembered for always giving more than he took and helping others whenever he could.
He leaves his wife and partner, Barbara; two sons, George and Mark; three stepchildren, Laurie, Sue-Ellen and Barry; three grandchildren, Alyssa, Aiden and Cassie; two step-grandchildren, Steven and Chad; two brothers, Gene and Richard of Philadelphia; and a sister, Catherine (Lavelle) of Philadelphia. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald and Donald of Philadelphia; and two sisters, Elaine and Rosemarie (Schofield) of Philadelphia.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours Saturday, Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Venskunas Funeral Home, 670 Stanley St., New Britain, Conn. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local watering hole, where this coupon and $2 gets you another cold one. Burial will be private.
