John Contino Jr., age 71, died peacefully at his home in Myrtle Beach on Dec. 8, 2017, after a strong battle with cancer. Born May 20, 1946, and raised in Berlin, he was the son of the late Margaret and John Contino.
John taught at MLK Jr. Elementary School in Hartford for 34 years and was known by many as the Wood Doctor, where he operated his furniture refinishing business in New Britain for 38 years. John was a member of Berlin’s Italian Independent Political Club and of Myrtle Beach’s Sons of Italy. He loved playing bocce, golfing and bowling, and was a huge baseball and basketball fan. John always loved good food, good company, and making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Doreen; daughter Janelle Salzman and her children, Joshua and Hope of New Hampshire; daughter Carrie Contino and her son, Devon, of Berlin; sister and brother-in-law Carol and Joe Gregor of Southington; brother and sister-in-law David and Sandy Contino of Berlin; in-law family Paul and Cheryl Volpe, Dennis Volpe and Diane Harper; lifelong best friend Ken Capodice and his wife, Sandi, and many other family members and friends.
