Winnifred Tressa (Stairs) Sala

Winnifred Tressa (Stairs) Sala, 98, of New Britain, loving wife for over 60 years of Raymond Peter Sala, who predeceased her on Oct. 19, 2006, died on Jan. 10, 2018. Born in New Brunswick, Canada, Sept. 25, 1919, she was the loving and devoted daughter of Frank Leigh Stairs and Bessie Ida (Dunlap) Stairs and the oldest sibling, four of whom remain: Eugene (Dolores) Stairs and Ronald (Nancy) Stairs of Canada, and Bernard (Minabel) Stairs and Ethel Antworth of Maine. She married Ray on Aug. 7, 1946, in New Brunswick and they began their life together in Hartford, Conn., moving to New Britain in 1951. Winnie worked as a waitress at a number of well-known restaurants for many years. On March 14, 1970, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and served Jehovah God faithfully and joyfully for 48 years actively preaching the good news until her death.

She also leaves her beloved family including son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Leigh Sala and Gloria (Salvatore) Sala of New Britain, who cared for her for many years while she remained in her home; her two beloved grandsons, Timothy Raymond Sala (Lizabeth Jackowitz) of Berlin and Jonathan Leigh Sala of New Britain, both of whom helped in her care, and Jonathan’s son, great-grandson, Holden Branford Williams-Sala, 3, whom she adored. She also loved all animals, particularly cats, caring for many feral and rescued cats all her life. Winnie was a strong, generous, kind and gentle woman who will be dearly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 234 Farmington Ave, Berlin, Conn., Saturday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. There are no calling hours.
