Mary Anne Sagraves, age 80, of Holly Springs, N.C., died Jan. 4, 2018, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of Joseph and Louise Jarocki Bokan. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and beloved friend to many.
A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, she also earned an MS degree in Elementary Education from Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, Conn. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, a scholastic honor sorority, and Pi Lambda Theta, honor sorority for educators. She taught various grade levels during her more than 30-year professional career and maintained contact with many of her former students throughout her life.
Mary Anne loved music. She sang in her church choir and various ensembles, including a college group that entertained U.S. troops in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to raising a family and teaching, she held numerous civic leadership roles. She chaired several committees such as one responsible for the formation of the School-Age Mothers’ Program to assist Hispanic mothers adjusting to life in the U.S. She served as an incorporator and member of the Citizens Advisory Council and on the Boards of Directors for both the YMCA and YWCA, where she was a Woman in Leadership Honoree. She was also nominated by her former students for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
While attending Trinity United Methodist Church in Connecticut, she was a member of the Administrative Board, co-chair of the annual church fair and editor/writer of the monthly newsletter. She also taught Sunday school and was a member of several committees.
Reading, crafts and scrapbooking were a few of her many interests. After retiring in 1993, she and Todd, her beloved husband of 59 years traveled extensively. They visited nearly 300 national parks before relocating to Holly Springs. Their cruises to Alaska and the Galapagos Islands ranked as two of their favorite trips.
Mary Anne is survived by her husband, Todd; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Scott and Michelle Sagraves of Belton, Texas; daughter, Ann (Sagraves) Elsner, of Apex, N.C.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Tayler and husband Will Stogsdill, Charlotte and William Stogsdill, Kimberly Maxwell and partner Stine Hella Nyland, Nick and Jordann Sagraves, Matt and Catie Elsner and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Holly Springs United Methodist Church (HSUMC), 108 Avent Ferry Road, Holly Springs, N.C. 27540.
