Rev. Daniel Joseph Karpiey

The Rev. Daniel Joseph Karpiey, 87, was called to eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, while residing at Monsignor Bojnowski Manor in New Britain. Born on April 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Dominic and Anna (Ruszewicz) Karpiej.

Father received his education from Sacred Heart of Jesus School, 1935-1944, New Britain Sr. High School, 1944-1949, and St. Thomas Seminary, 1949-1951 & 1951-1953.

He completed studies in philosophy at St. Thomas Seminary in 1955 and went on to major seminary formation in preparation for priesthood, while studying theology, at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Md., which he completed in 1959.

Father was ordained to the priesthood at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Hartford, by The Most Reverend John F. Hackett, Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford, on May 7, 1959.

He served as an assistant priest in the parishes of Holy Cross Church, New Britain from May 1959 to July 1959; St. Francis Xavier, New Milford, from July 1959 to September 1960; St. Stanislaus, Bristol, from September 1960 to June 1961; St. Francis, Naugatuck, from July 1961 to January 1968; St. Joseph, Meriden, from September 1969 to April 1972, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Waterbury, from April 1972 to March 1973; St. James, Manchester; St. James, Rocky Hill, from February 1980 to December 1980; Holy Cross, New Britain, from December 1980 to June 1989. In July 1989, Father was appointed pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish in Waterbury through August 1993; then of St. Casimir, Terryville, from August 1993 to September 1999; and finally of SS. Peter and Paul, Wallingford, from September 1999 to March 2004. He served as Pastor Emeritus at Ss. Peter and Paul, Wallingford, from March of 2004 until he entered senior priest status in June 2007, and then resided at the Archbishop Cronin Residence in Bloomfield, Conn.

Left to honor and cherish his memory are his brother, Henry Karpiej (Joyce) of Naples, Fla., and his sister, Florence of Windsor, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in New Britain, with the most Rev. Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford, presiding. Rites of Committal will follow the Mass at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends are welcome to call prior to the Mass from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, on the corner of Farmington Avenue and Biruta Street, New Britain. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Burritt Hill in New Britain.
