Doreen Marie Doot Pittinger, loving wife of Lawrence Pittinger, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018, with her family by her side. She was born on Nov. 19, 1953 in Newark, N.J., and grew up in Simsbury, Conn. Doreen was the oldest of six children raised by Raymond and Josephine (Vivona) Doot. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut and her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. She taught at the State Receiving and Study Home in East Windsor; the Long Lane School in Middletown, and the Alternative School in New Britain, where she was Teacher of The Year (2015). She enjoyed teaching piano to her nieces and nephew. A woman of strong faith, Doreen was an active parishioner at St. Maurice Church in New Britain and St. Paul’s Parish in Berlin. She volunteered for many church activities and was considered The Master Baker at St. Maurice Church. She enjoyed many craft activities including cake decorating, quilting, zentagle, flower arranging and scrapbooking.
Besides her husband Larry, Doreen is survived by her parents, Raymond and Josephine Doot of Brewster, Mass.; her children, Andrea Garrett and her husband, Nicolas of Mustang, Okla.; Juliana Pittinger of New Britain and Jason Pittinger of New Haven; her siblings, Duane Doot and his wife Kathy of Torrington; David Doot and his wife Diane of Wethersfield; Christopher Doot and his wife Sandy of Millersville, Md.; Maria Giffune and her husband Jim of Turner, Maine, and Gregory Doot and his wife Eileen of Otis, Mass.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by lifelong friends Charlene Shutz, Nancy Orlowski and Jayne DePole Bogucki, and her walking buddies Laura Foran and Mary Ann Varga.
Funeral Services for Doreen will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt Street, New Britain, followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Maurice Church, Wightman Street, New Britain. Burial will be private. Relatives and friends may call on Doreen’s family on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the Burritt Hill Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
