Joseph Bijas, 95, of Kensington, husband of Irene Bijas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, in New Britain.
Born in Zamosh, Poland, he was the son of the late John and Marianna (Rogowska) Bijas. During World War II, he lived in Germany. In 1947, he moved to Belgium and in 1948, he married Irene Warton. In 1953, he moved to New Britain, Conn., where he was formerly employed as a tool and die machinist at Atlantic Machine for two years and for many years at Fafnir Bearing Co., retiring in 1987. Joseph was an avid gardener, and someone who could fix anything. He loved sports, especially soccer and Duke basketball.
Surviving are his wife, Irene (Warton) Bijas; his son, Jan Bijas of Aiken, S.C.; a son-in-law, Gary Simoneau and his wife, Maria; his granddaughter, Nicole Manno, her husband, Jack and their children, Jack and Luc of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Edith Simoneau and by his grandson, Michael Simoneau.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, in New Britain. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. A calling hour will be held on Thursday morning, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 South Main St., New Britain.
