Genevieve Theresa Kochanowsky nee Lejkowski passed away peacefully at home on Friday after a long illness. She was 95 years old. Known to her friends and family as “Jenny” she lived in New Britain all her life. She was married for 69 years to Lester Kochanowsky, a prominent dentist, who predeceased her in 2015.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane Morrow of New York City (Spouse Charles), two sons, Douglas of New Britain, and David of Saunderstown, Rhode Island, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Sara Barczak (spouse Rafal and children Matthew and Andrew), Amy Mesrobian (spouse Chris and daughter Avery), Emma Morrow and Jake Kochanowsky.
Jenny loved playing tennis and golf and she and her husband were members of the Shuttle Meadow Country club since the late 1960s. She remained an avid tennis fan all her life and keenly followed professional tennis. She loved the social aspect of Shuttle Meadow and many of her closest friends were members there. While her tennis playing days ended some time ago, she continued as a member of the club dining there often and loved speaking with those who worked there as well as with other (younger) members.
Jenny and Lester traveled extensively during their lives and some of her fondest memories came from those sightseeing trips overseas with family and friends. Vestiges of those trips could be seen in various mementos and pictures in her home. She was a 25-year volunteer with the Red Cross and the New Britain General Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Shuttle Meadow Garden Club.
Jenny’s father and mother were both first-generation Polish immigrants and they ran a hardware store on Broad Street in New Britain.
In her childhood, she and her family attended Sacred Heart Church and a Mass of Christian burial will be held there for her at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. Interment will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
