Florence (Gernsky) Szurley, 88, of New Britain, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2018, after a very long debilitating illness. Born in New Britain, she was the widow of the late Chester Szurley and daughter of the late Joseph and Emily Gernsky. She attended local schools and was employed by Stanley Tools until she retired in 1993. She was a long time member of Holy Cross Church.
She was a lifelong resident of New Britain. She married Chester Szurley in 1951 and they made their home in New Britain, where they raised their four children. She was a devoted wife and mother who cherished time spent with family. She was an avid West Farms Walker and joined her husband in that activity after she retired. She loved to create ceramic items and many people have been blessed with her many works over the years.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her son, Robert Szurley and his wife, Isabel Szurley of Cromwell; daughters, Marianne Salerno and her husband, Daniel Salerno of New Britain, Doreen Casey and her husband, Richard Casey of Rocky Hill, and Carolyn Race of Longmeadow, Mass. Also surviving are three sisters, Doris Wojtera of New Britain, Agnes Hamilton of Margate, Fla., and Jeanne Bonici of Southington; grandchildren, Kayla Salerno, Dena Salerno, Alyssa (Casey) Pollina, Erica Casey, Tyler Casey, Lauren (Szurley) Morse, Emily Race, Jenna Race, and several nieces and nephews. There was a special place in her heart for her great-granddog, Riley, who always made her smile.
In addition to her husband Chester and her parents, she was also predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Kordek. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the hardworking and dedicated aids at Ledgecrest for their care during her long stay there. Special thanks to her longtime friend, Francis Lavoie, who made so many efforts to see her during her long illness.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 31 Biruta St., New Britain, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain.
