Jeanne Marie (Smart) Place, 90, of Rocky Hill, widow of Kenneth M. Place Jr., passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, at Hartford Hospital.
Born in Detroit, Mich., she grew up in Indianapolis, Ind. She and her family lived in Berlin, Conn., for 32 years before moving to Charlestown, N.H., in retirement. She lived in New Hampshire for 23 years before returning to Berlin in 2011. Jeanne was a graduate of University of New Hampshire, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She later received a Master of Special Education from Central Connecticut State University. She was a member of the Berlin Congregational Church.
Jeanne is survived by three daughters, Linda Peterson and her husband George of Lancaster, Pa., Virginia Myer and her husband Dr. Charles III of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Judith Charamut and her husband William of Wethersfield, Conn. She is also survived by her grandchildren Todd Hannula and wife Dawn of Harrogate, England, Reid Hannula of San Francisco, Calif., Ian Hannula and husband Joey Haller of San Francisco, Calif., Charlie Myer and wife Amy of Cincinnati, Ohio, David Myer and wife Kristen of Zionsville, Ind., Bill Charamut and wife Abby of Wethersfield, Conn., Ryan Charamut and wife Danielle of Wethersfield, Conn., Abby Shaw and husband Kevin of Killingworth, Conn., and Trevor Charamut of Wethersfield, Conn. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, with the 12th coming soon, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jean and Malcolm Nichols, and two nephews.
In Berlin, Jeanne was active with PTA, town committees and the Girl Scouts for many years, as well her church, and was employed by Connecticut Bank and Trust for many years. While in New Hampshire, her activities included sitting on the board of the New Hampshire West Red Cross, president of the Charlestown Woman’s Club and driving patients for the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Berlin Congregational Church, 878 Worthington Ridge, with a reception to follow. Burial will be at Maple Cemetery.
