Leona Steele, 85, of New Britain, loving wife to the late David Steele, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019.

She was born in Eynon, Penn., daughter of the late George and Veronica (Borse) Yatsco, moving to New Britain, where she settled and raised her family. Leona was an active member of St. Maurice Church in New Britain for most of her life. She was a CCD teacher as well as a Eucharistic Minister, and helped out on many projects at the church over the years. Leona loved to knit and she would generously knit hats and gloves for children in need up until last year. She loved traveling with her husband, David, and together they saw much of the countryside in their motor home. Growing up she was a very good athlete, excelling in softball, skills that she would later teach her sons as they learned how to play baseball. She was also an avid Red Sox fan, enjoying their success and enduring their failures over the years. A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Leona was happiest when surrounded by her family and she will be dearly missed by all who loved her.

She leaves her sons, Kenneth Steele and his wife, Lorrie, of Windsor and Jeffrey Steele and his wife, Barbara, of Southington; her daughter, Doreen Steele of Bristol and her cherished grandchildren, Meghan, Kacie, Kyle and Brynn Steele.

In addition to her husband David, she was predeceased by her sister, Maryanne Jones.

Leona’s funeral will begin on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 10:15 a.m., from Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Burritt Hill, 332 Burritt St., in New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., at St. Maurice Church in New Britain. Relatives and friends are invited to call just prior to the funeral from 9 to 10 a.m., at Burritt Hill. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery in New Britain immediately following the Mass.
