Helen M. (Gomes) Roby, wife of the late Charles J. Roby, Sr., died on Dec. 30 due to complications from covid-19. Born in 1923 to Avelino and Emma Gomes in Middleboro, Mass., Helen was the second oldest of nine children and the oldest daughter. From those earliest days helping raise her siblings, Helen was our family matriarch and caregiver to four generations: children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her brother Arthur in California and predeceased by her siblings Albert, Margaret, Charlie, Rose, Irene, Avelino Jr., and Ceilia. Helen is also survived by her daughters Charlene Shorter, Lynn Roby Knapp and husband Vincent Knapp Jr., Kim Roby Hollfelder and husband Richard Hollfelder, and her son Peter Roby. Helen passed shortly after the death of her oldest son Charles J. Roby Jr. on Dec. 24, 2020.

A wonderful cook and baker, Helen worked for over 35 years at Fafnir Bearing in New Britain. She was a member of the Fafnir Girls’ Club and bowled in a league for couples at Laurel Lanes in Southington for many years.

Helen and her family helped support the New Britain Boys and Girls Club through the Chuck Roby Golf Tournament held each summer at Stanley Golf Course in honor of her late husband. The tournament helped raise much-needed resources for programs serving New Britain area youth and Helen was a fixture at the post-tournament banquet each year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the New Britain Boys and Girls Club.

Due to covid-19 restrictions, a small family-only burial will take place soon. Her family plans to celebrate the lives of Helen and her son Chuck, Jr. at a later date. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Please share a memory of Helen with the family in the online guest book @ www.ericksonhansen.com
