Betty Jeanne “Helen” Schmitt, 91, of New Britain passed away peacefully at home Monday, July 26, 2021. Betty was born in Baltimore, Md. She worked as a customer service manager for Emhart and retired in 1989. She was a member of St. Ann Church, New Britain and a member of Elks Lodge #957. Betty volunteered at the Hospital of Central CT. She was an avid reader of books; there wasn’t a book she hadn’t read, and loved animals. Helen enjoyed life to the fullest with her family.

Helen is survived by her son Donald Schmitt, Jr and his wife Chris of North Carolina, her three daughters Julia Nardelli and her husband Richard of Newington, Joann Brzezinski and her husband Alex of New Britain, and Diana Sperry and her husband Marc of Cromwell, her eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Laurel Schmitt of King George, Va. Helen was predeceased by her husband Donald Schmitt Sr., and her son James Schmitt.

A Celebration of Helen’s life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain. Burial will be private. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.
