PLAINVILLE - Parents posed for pictures with their children near the sign for Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School Thursday before the children headed off to meet their teachers and begin their first day.

One such family was Greg Jones, Erin Delaney and their children, Adam and Alexander, who are 4 and 2 years old and will be starting pre-school.

“This is the first time we are bringing them to school here,” said Delaney. “We’ve heard good things.”

“We’ve heard that the principal (Andrew Batchelder) is very organized and that the teachers are very dedicated,” said Jones.

Daniela Ponce, a fifth-grader at the K-5 school, said Wheeler is “a good school.”

“It is a good place for all the kids who come to school,” she said. “There are a lot of activities to participate in and a lot of cooperation.”

Daniela said music is her favorite subject and that she plays the flute.

“I love the school,” said James Battisti, who along with his wife, Erica, was dropping off their children Kai, a second-grader, and Charlee, a pre-schooler. “Mr. Batchelder is great.”

“The principal really goes above and beyond,” said Erica Battisti.

Melanie Lessard also said she loves the school and the principal. Her children, twin boys Josh and Melvyn Morissette, are in first grade and have been coming to Wheeler for two years.

Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett said she visited all five local schools Thursday morning.

“It was a great first day,” she said. “I made a point of visiting all of our Pre-K classrooms as this is the first year of full day/full week Pre-K. The students and parents were all very excited and many thanked me for making this happen in Plainville.”

Our Kindergarten teachers report our incoming kindergarten class that attended our Pre-K last year is ready on day number one to learn.”
