PLAINVILLE -Community leaders joined owner and pharmacist Suruchi Patel Friday in celebrating the grand opening of the Plainville Community Pharmacy at 170 East St.
The event was attended by Town Council Chairwoman Kathy Pugliese and state Rep. William Petit Jr., R-Plainville, along with friends and family members.
“This is a wonderful use of this space,” said Pugliese. “We are delighted to see new businesses coming in to Plainville and this pharmacy has a real community-oriented feel to it. I think that the people of Plainville will really gravitate toward it.”
Petit, a physician, congratulated Patel and discussed the types of medicines she carries.
“The pharmacy industry is shrinking. You see CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens everywhere, but not too many local, mom-and-pop shops,” he said. “I think people will enjoy having a local, independent pharmacy.”
Patel, a resident of Berlin, has more than 10 years of experience as a pharmacist. A graduate of Long Island University, she has a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and is certified in medication therapy management, immunization and opioid overdose treatment.
The pharmacy had a soft opening a month ago, and she said things are off to a good start.
“People in the neighborhood have been very welcoming. The community is great,” she said. “We had been renovating this space for the past six to eight months and everything ended up turning out better than I had hoped for. We hope to provide more personalized service to patients and be more like family than a big, corporate chain. The way I see it, we’re not just a business out to make a profit. We want to help people, too. This isn’t just my business, this is everyone’s business.”
Plainville Community Pharmacy delivers to Plainville, Southington, Berlin, Bristol, Farmington and New Britain. It is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
