PLAINVILLE - A local mother has been charged with drunken driving while she had a 6-year-old child in the vehicle.

Amy Demaine, 34, of 25 Terra Road, was allegedly seen driving erratically and in the wrong lane at one point before she was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, risk of injury to a minor and child endangerment while driving under the influence.

According to the police report, a witness contacted police on Monday, at about 3:47 p.m., and said someone driving on Route 10 was crossing the double yellow center lines and into the opposite lane. The vehicle, a gray Honda Accord, was then seen pulling into the Great Beginnings daycare on East Street.

There, police found the vehicle and saw Demaine walking toward it, along with a child. After the 6-year-old got in, the officer stopped Demaine from closing the driver side door and told her to put the keys on the dashboard. She complied and told the officer she was looking for her daughter, who was later found to be at home with her sister.

Demaine, according to police, then failed multiple sobriety tests. The 6-year-old boy she was with was picked up by his father.

Once back at the police department, Demaine registered a 0.2352 and 0.2368 blood alcohol content, police said.

Officers were also able to speak again to the witness who first called police. She said she was at Linden Street School at about 3:30 p.m. when she saw a woman, later identified as Demaine, stumbling from her car to the school, where she picked up a young boy. She then got into an Accord and drove away with the child, the witness said.

The woman, who followed Demaine, saw her cross into oncoming traffic and stay in the wrong lane for about 15 seconds before getting back into the correct lane, the police report said. Demaine also allegedly stopped at a green light at two different intersections, which caused traffic to back up and motorists to honk their horns.

After her arrest, Demaine was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on Jan. 22.
