PLAINVILLE - A local man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to assaulting a pregnant woman.
Danny Rojas, 42, of 100 Norton Park Road, was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended, and two years of probation during a hearing in Bristol Superior Court. The sentence was worked out in a plea deal offered by state prosecutors.
Rojas pleaded guilty to one count each of third-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment. A number of charges were not pursued, including those of first-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault of a pregnant person, second-degree threatening, disorderly conduct, fifth-degree larceny and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.
According to the police report, Rojas and the female victim - who has not been identified - argued in a local apartment Sept. 18, which triggered the physical violence. The woman called 911 at about 10:24 p.m.
When police arrived at the apartment, Rojas had already left. He was found nearby in a vehicle and detained while officers investigated. Inside the vehicle, police found a baton similar to the ones officers carry.
The victim, who at the time was about four months pregnant, said Rojas at some point grabbed her by the neck and pinned her down onto a bed, according to the report. She was able to escape after several seconds and began screaming, which alerted her daughter that something was wrong, she said.
The daughter then began banging on the door to the room where the victim and Rojas were, but he opened the door and would not let her in, the report said. He then told the victim that, after she gives birth to her child, he would have someone else assault her, she told police.
Rojas allegedly then knocked down a fan out of anger and left the room with the victim’s cell phone.
The victim, who had scratches and light bruising on her neck, declined medical treatment.
During probation, Rojas has been ordered to undergo anger management treatment, if his supervising officer feels it is necessary, and not to assault the complainant.
