PLAINVILLE - A New Britain man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting his wife and her elderly mother during a violent outbreak in a local parking lot.

Glenn Castonguay, 59, has been accused of punching his wife in the face and violently twisting her 88-year-old mother’s arm, leaving bruising, according to the arrest warrant. He faces charges of third-degree assault of an elderly person, third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

According to the warrant, Castonguay and the two complainants were in a vehicle that had been coming from Bristol when he allegedly began using abusive language toward his wife. The wife told him to stop, but when he continued, she pulled into the American Eagle parking lot on New Britain Avenue and told him to get out.

Castonguay, the complainants allege, then reached into the front seat, shoving the 88-year-old, who was on the passenger side, out of his way with his elbow and reached for the keys in the ignition. The elderly woman reached out to stop him, so he grabbed her arm and twisted it, the warrant said.

Castonguay and his wife then struggled over the keys before he allegedly punched her in the face, the warrant said. The woman called 911, but Castonguay allegedly took off on foot before officers could arrive. Police acquired a warrant for his arrest and charged him Wednesday. He was held in custody overnight.

At his arraignment Thursday, in Bristol Superior Court, officials said Castonguay has no prior criminal record. Despite his lack of previous run-ins with the law, Jeffrey Lee, state prosecutor, asked for a substantial bond.

“These are very serious allegations,” Lee said.

Castonguay was ordered held on $25,000 bond, and his case was continued to July 31.
