BRISTOL - It was a matchup between two teams playing in their final games of the season but you wouldn’t have been able to tell by the way both the Plainville girls basketball team and Bristol Central played on Wednesday night.
The game was tightly contested for the most part but Plainville pulled away in the fourth quarter to pick up the road win 55-39.
“I was very happy with the effort,” Plainville head coach Jessica Neuweiler said. “We knew we needed to come out and set the tone offensively and defensively and I believe we did that and overall I was happy with the way we closed out our season.”
“I don’t think we played with as much composure as we did [against Bristol Eastern],” Bristol Central head coach Steve Gaudet said. “We had a bunch of unforced turnovers and things like that. I don’t know if it was because it’s senior night or what but it happens.”
Jessica Masco led the way for Plainville in the game as she scored a game-high 19 points while knocking down three 3-pointers. Izzy Lozefski followed closely with 18 points for the Blue Devils.
“It was great and a lot of fun,” Izzy Lozefski said. “I was a little nervous because it’s the last game of the season and we wanted to end on a good note. Even though we didn’t make the tournament it was great to send off the seniors with a win and we all worked hard together.”
Bristol Central didn’t have any players score in double figures but Sarah Strilkauskas led the way with nine points, five of which came from the free-throw line. Sarah Guerin was next in line for the Rams as she had eight points.
After trailing by seven at halftime Bristol Central cut the lead down to three a little bit less than halfway through the third quarter on a Ravan Rodriguez layup. That was part of a 6-0 run for the Rams.
Plainville responded though as Sam Lozefski made a layup followed by a Masco offensive rebound and put-back. The Blue Devils were able to take an eight point lead into the fourth, 39-31.
Plainville scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to take the first double-digit lead of the game at 10 points, but back-to-back lay ups from Guerin cut the lead right back down to six with less than six minutes left in the game.
That was as close as Bristol Central would get though, as a 3-point play from Izzy Lozefski extended the lead to 11 with four minutes left. At that point Plainville slowed down the pace drastically and used clock as time was in its favor. The Blue Devils would go on to grow the lead as big as 16 in the fourth.
The first quarter was played at a fast pace and was evenly played by both sides. Bristol Central opened up the scoring with a couple of free throws but Plainville answered with five straight points to take its first lead. Izzy Lozefski hit a three during that spurt.
The Rams were up 8-7 and had the ball with the clock winding down but they were called for a travel. The Blue Devils took over just in front of half court and Masco banked in a three at the buzzer to give them a 10-8 lead after one.
The second quarter remained tightly contested as the two teams traded buckets but Plainville started to knock down some triples, while Bristol Central was making two-point buckets. Cheyenne Emmendorfer and Masco made back-to-back 3-pointers with two and a half minutes left in the second to take a four point lead, the largest of the game for either side up until that point.
The Blue Devils would extend that lead to seven by halftime on another Masco 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the half. Plainville went into the break up 28-21.
