Area girls tennis teams facing difficult matchups in state tournaments

The area girls tennis teams learned their paths to a state title Friday afternoon as the CIAC released its Class L, M and S brackets. It was a strong year for girls tennis with all but one school qualifying for their respective postseason tournaments and this postseason should feature some interesting matchups.

New Britain and Southington will represent Class L. After an 11-5 regular season, the Blue Knights were awarded the No. 13 seed and will host No. 20 Hall (7-6) down in Darien in the qualifying round this morning at 10 a.m.

The two teams have already played this season with Southington topping the Warriors 5-2. Should the Blue Knights take care of business and advance, they would play fourth-seeded Darien (15-1) in the first round in the afternoon.

After choosing not to participate in the tournament last season, the Hurricanes are now back in. They earned the No. 21 seed with an 8-7 record and will travel to Greenwich to take on No. 12 Fairfield Ludlowe (12-5) this morning at 10 a.m.

If New Britain pulls off the upset, it will take on fifth-seeded Greenwich (14-2). If everything goes in Southington’s and New Britain’s favors, the two schools would meet in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.

Berlin is the area’s representative in Class M. The 14th-ranked Redcoats finished 10-6 and will take on No. 19 Bunnell in the qualifying round today at 10 a.m. at Chase Collegiate. If Berlin wins, it would play No. 3 Nonnewaug (17-2) at 12:30 p.m. that day.

Out of Class S, Plainville earned the 23rd seed after a 10-6 season and will take on No. 10 Shepaug (12-4) in the qualifying round today at 9 a.m. A win for the Blue Devils means a match up against the Litchfield/Lewis Mills winner.

Newington was the only local girls tennis team not to make the tournament. The Indians fell two wins shy on qualifying for the Class L tournament.
