Sports Roundup: Redcoats get win, qualify swimmers for states

Berlin girls swimming and diving had a successful afternoon in Manchester. The Redcoats are not only taking home a 98-83 win against the Indians, but they also qualified swimmers for states.

The 200 medley relay was a big win for Berlin, setting the tempo for the rest of the meet. The relay team consisted of Kelly Chmielewski, Nadia Humen, Gabriell Pattavina and Madeline Palmese with a time of 2:06.38.

Chmielewski and Humen both qualified for states Tuesday afternoon. Chmielewski qualified in the 100 butterfly (1:08.29) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.70) while Humen qualified in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.94).

Berlin also placed first, second and third in diving. Alina Whiteside took first place with a score of 180.15.

Rocky Hill 90, Plainville 86: The Blue Devils came up short in a meet that went back-and-forth in the early going.

Lydia Weinberg took first in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Phoebe Gediman placed first in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Isabella Bantz also qualified for states in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:13.98.

Plainville had a four-point lead but Rocky Hill tied it up going into diving. The Terriers then took control in the back half of the meet.


Innovation 3, Achievement First 0: The Ravens won 25-6, 25-12, 25-13. Bailee Nardi had nine aces, Morgan Sartor had four kills and Nashelie Saladini had three assists.

Berlin 3, East Hartford 0: The Redcoats came home with a victory over the Hornets with set scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.

Maya Wroblewski had six kills and one block, while Jenna Baruffi had 22 assists for the evening.

Southington 3, Newington 0: The Blue Knights swept to a 25-10, 25-21, 25-13 victory.

Southington (5-1) had highlights from multiple players. Steph Zera had another incredible game with 32 assists and seven digs. Libero Nolyn Allen had 16 digs, while Brooke Cooney had seven kills and five digs. Jenna Martin had six aces and Hanna Zalina had six kills.
