Sports Roundup: Southington wrestling takes first place at Lancer Tournament in Waterford

NEWINGTON -The Newington girls basketball team suffered their first 51-44 loss of the season against visiting Farmington.

Newington jumped out early on, outsourcing its opponent 21-12 in the first quarter. But, what Newington didn’t know was this would be its only lead of the day.

Throughout the rest of the game Farmington outscored Newington 39-23.

Farmington’s Izzy Lipinski lead with 20 points, shooting 8-for-12 at the free throw line while teammate Rylee Fountain made three three’s ending her day with 13 points.

The Indians were led by Ashanti Frazier (18 points), Aby Flores (10), Gio Rivera (5) and Maya Gajowiak (5).


Plainville Invitational: The Blue Devils placed fifth overall, but had plenty of outstanding individual performances along the way.

Sebby Soli won the 132-pound bracket and was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. Dominic Pedrolini placed second in the 120-pound weight class, while teammate Kyle Voisine also placed second. His was at 152 pounds.

Alex Hernandez and Travis Boone both took fourth in 170 pounds and 220 pounds respectively.

Lancer Invitational: Southington took first place in the tournament at Waterford High School.

Caleb Brick, Shaun Wagner, Tagan Welch and Paul Calo all earned first place in their respective weight classes, while Calo was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Timothy Budnik, Jacob Cardozo, Jason Brault, Sebastian Lombardo and Jake Monson all earned second places. Derek Guida, Luca Veneziano and Jacob Vecchio earned third places.

Manchester Invitational: New Britain continued its strong start to the season, finishing sixth out off 11 teams in its opening tournament of the season as well as placing four individual wrestlers.

Elijah Watson took third place in the 145-pound weight class, Isiah Medina took third at 195 pounds, Eduardo Morales placed third in the 220-pound weight class and Juliano Morales also took third with his coming in the heavyweight division.

Eduardo Morales also took home the fast fall award for most pins in the tournament in the shortest amount of time.


Newington-Berlin 2, NFA 1: The Newington co-op won its season opener thanks to goals in both the first and second periods.

Sam Davies netted the first goal on an assist from Kyle Bucher, while Matt Lavoie scored on an assist from Ethan Ranger.
